Each performance will be different – in the pitches chosen by the vocalists and in the rhythms chosen by the pianist – depending on the personal interpretation and expression of each musician. The Air Around Us encourages individuals of all musical levels and abilities to listen, interact, breathe, and express themselves, together.

The Air Around Us is an exercise in aural collaboration and free interpretation. Composed for voices and piano, the piano creates a melodic foundation, sans rhythm, upon which the voices are integrated and layered. The voices interact with this harmonic framework by listening and responding to the piano, based on a series of vocal directions. By providing this guidance in prose, rather than traditional musical notation, this flexible, unique and varied participation invites vocalists of all skills levels and ages, including non-musicians and audience members.
